Lipid-related thiamine deficiency cause mortality of river lampreys (Lampetra fluviatilis) during pre-spawning fasting

چکیده
River lampreys (Lampetra fluviatilis) were caught in the fall 2014 on entering Perhonjoki for spawning and kept at a hatchery until late spring 2015 to produce larvae compensatory stockings. Since died massively from early February onwards, they investigated March May clarify cause of deaths. The symptoms resembled those lipid-related thiamine (vitamin B1) deficiency salmonines, called M74 syndrome Baltic Sea area. Because lipid content was known be high, concentrations analyzed liver ovulated unfertilized eggs, mass, length, whole-body also measured. hepatic total (TotTh) concentration significantly negatively correlated with body fatness index (mass length ratio) both females males. In females, TotTh less than half that males, most moribund largest fattiest females. Females survived artificial stripping eggs smaller, their higher, lower, March. free had stronger positive correlation phosphorylated derivatives mass. It concluded increased peroxidation due mobilization polyunsaturated fatty acids lipids exogenous vitellogenesis consumed as an antioxidant during pre-spawning fasting—especially females—and thus caused death. is suggested ensure stockings, could thiamine-injected improve survival eggs’ status.

Oxygen consumption, ventilatory frequency and heart rate of lampreys (Lampetra fluviatilis) during their spawning run.
1. The standard rate of oxygen consumption, ventilatory frequency and heart rate of adult Lampetra fluviatilis were measured during the light phase of the photoperiod and at times corresponding to various stages in the upstream migration. 2. All three parameters increased during the spawning run but only in mature individuals were significant differences found between the sexes. 3. The regressi...
متن کاملOxygen dissociation curves of the blood of larval and adult lampreys (Lampetra fluviatilis).
1. An electrolytic method was used to plot the oxygen dissociation curves of whole blood from both the larva and adult of the lamprey Lampetra fluviatilis at a temperature of 10 degrees C and over a pH range of 6-5-8-1. 2. Larval blood has a far higher affinity for oxygen than that of adults, the respective calculated P50's at a pH of 7-75 being 1-9 and 10-7 mmHg. 3. The high affinity of larval...

متن کاملA micropuncture study of kidney function in the river lamprey Lampetra fluviatilis adapted to sea water.
Micropuncture techniques have been used to investigate kidney function in lampreys adapted to hyperosmotic media. Plasma electrolyte concentrations were maintained well below corresponding concentrations in the external environment. Urine composition was variable, but generally showed high concentrations of magnesium, sulphate and chloride ions. Lampreys in 50% sea water produced urine which wa...
